Day 18 – July 16, 2003
Karen’s Delay
Ride from Grasonville, Maryland, to Alexandria, Virginia
Today we started out early because I wanted to try to get
all the way down to Roanoke, Virginia.
We got into DC and had an opportunity to get up close to the white house and
still get some pictures of some of the other sites. We then crossed the river
and decided that since we had time, we’d stop and check out Mt.
Vernon and the 1st president’s
home. It took a little longer than expected, so we got back to the freeway,
gassed up and just as we were heading out of the station, Karen decided it was
time to roll her bike onto her foot. This time she was not so lucky. She was
sure she had broken her ankle. I found a motel across the street, got a room,
move her bike then mine to the motel. I unpacked them, left hers’ there and
went back to the station to get her and rode her to the hospital. About 4 hours
and $400 later, we found that she had not actually broken it, but only sprained
it. She can still ride, but has to elevate it for 48 hours. They gave her an “air
cast”, which is effectively a double splint, and told her she could ride with
the “cast”. We’ll see how she feels tomorrow before making any decisions, but hopefully,
I’ll see you on the byways….
