Day 20 – July 18, 2003

Recuperate and Tune-up

Ride from the hotel to the dealer 4 times.

When we woke up this morning, Karen’s foot was bothering her and she didn’t really want to ride. We also needed to get the bikes tuned up, so I called around and found a dealer only 20 miles away that was willing to do both bikes today. I rode mine down there and waited about 2 hours for them to complete it. I wouldn’t have minded waiting if they had had a waiting room, or even a chair I could have sat on, but my knees did not like the standing much. I rode back, got Karen’s bike and rode it down. This time I looked around before dropping off the bike and found a Wendy’s only about a quarter mile away. I walked to the Wendy’s and it was so packed that I walked across the road and down a little farther to Hardes, (Carl’s for those of you on the west coast.) and waited there for about an hour, then walked back. I had to wait about another hour, but the bikes run great. I was a little disappointed though because I had ask them to check the alignment of the handlebars on Karen’s spirit, and I had to do it myself when I got back to the motel.  Still, all in all I have to give them good marks, because they took the bikes on short notice and did a good job on both of them.

I got back around 3:30 and had about a half hour to pack up the old seat from my bike and get it to the post office to get it shipped back home.

We went out for dinner at a little place around the corner called Famous Anthony’s. The food at this place was not only great, but it was reasonably priced, the portions were of a size that gave you plenty of food without giving you so much that you need to take some with you. It was a pleasure to not only eat a good meal, but to have room left over to for desert. The food was not the only thing that impressed me though.  We have stopped at restaurants of all kinds all across this country, and never have we had a server that was so attentive, cheerful, proficient, interested in our having a good meal, and always with an honest smile. She didn’t just server our meal; she made us feel like we were at home. Her boss should know that Leah could make an outstanding addition to any restaurant in the country.

The other thing I noticed about this place is that the gas price is lower than any other place we’ve stopped so far. I am hoping to find more of these prices as we head farther south tomorrow. So if you are in that area, I’ll see you on the byways….
