Day 6 – August 27, 2004

Starting off today we got to the dog sitters early, but of course they were almost 15 minutes late. Then we decided to take the freeway back to save time. The problem with that was that the street we were on had an exit but not an entrance. It took us an additional 15 minutes to locate an entrance and so late again at the base. We did get there early enough to see the entire ceremony, but we had to sit in the cheep seats where everyone looked like ants. The add to the confusion, he was in the group ahead of the flags and we were told he would be behind them, so we missed him as he marched by. Still we got to see him right after the ceremony and he was able to ride back to the reception center with us. He also got a town pass, but couldn’t leave till 2 pm, so we checked out his barracks (DORM) and then went to lunch on base with him. After lunch we still had time, so we checked out the Base Exchange. I remember this in my day as a kind of country store that had everything you would need. This was an actual inside shopping mall. Not only that, but I remember getting good prices and these didn’t seem any different than any other store around town. It finally got to be 2 pm and we left the base to get the dog from the dog jail. My daughter took Cory back to the hotel where he proceeds to relax (sleep). About 5pm he wants to go back to the base to take care of some laundry and alterations. Got to get those stripes on you know. By the time we got him back and got everything in order, there was not enough time to do much else but eat, so we stopped at the mini mall for a quick junk food treat. Pizza and hot dogs!
He went back to the DORM, so Karen, Kelly, Angie and I went out to a real restaurant for dinner. Diamond enjoyed the motel room all to herself for a couple of hours and was comfy in the window when we got back. Tonight I am not even setting the alarm because Kelly has to go get Cory at the base in the morning. We are sleeping in. Tomorrow will be completely on Cory’s schedule, so we will have to wait till then to see what we’ll be doing. So comes the close of another day in the life of a proud father. I only wish to share some of that pride with the rest of the world. In another day or so, I bee back to the real world, and then I’ll see you on the byways…
